visa rules

If you wish to travel to Denmark, you should inquire whether you will need a visa. In the affirmative, make sure to file an application in due time.

Visas

Hungarian citizens do not need a visa to travel to Denmark as both nations are members of Schengen.

For other citizens the process for obtaining a visa is as follows:

A visa is issued for the purpose of a short stay (less than 3 months) in Denmark and other Schengen countries. Employment is not permitted during the stay.

Foreign citizens who are exempted from basic visa requirements can stay, but not work, in the Schengen region up to 3 months.

If you do not know whether you need a visa or not see Do I need a visa?

Application formalities

You may apply for a visa at any authorised Danish mission provided you are staying legally in the country in question.

Application forms (a harmonised EU form and a Danish supplementary form) may be downloaded from the homepage New to Denmark. The forms may also be obtained from the mission where you wish to file your application.

A recent photo of good likeness, as well as documentation for the purpose of the stay, e.g. an invitation, should accompany the application. Please notice that there are new rules for ID photos. Click here for more information.

Furthermore, a bank statement should also be enclosed.

Processing time

In some cases the visa applications can be examined and decided upon by the Danish mission abroad. This depends on the purpose of the visit and other circumstances. In such cases the visa is normally issued within a few days. All other cases must be referred to and processed by the Danish Immigration Service in Copenhagen.

Application for residence and work permit to Denmark

Citizens of a Schengen country that want to stay in Denmark for more than 3 months must obtain a residence permit.
To achieve this, the candidate must, in person, present to the embassy: the passport, a valid contract between the employer and / or school and the person in question, a correct completed application form and 2 passport photos.

Important: the application form must be completed by the employer or school prior to the applicant’s completion of the application form. From January 2012 it is not possible to apply for residence and work permit to Denmark at the Danish Embassy in Budapest, instead you'll have to go to the Danish Embassy in Vienna.

An examination of residence and work permit usually takes around half an hour if all documents are appropriately completed.

For Hungarian citizens this application is free, to all other citizens the price is 1000 DKK per residence and work application.
